Submarine in Swedish Territory: Someone Trespassed, But Origin Unknown

By    |   Friday, 14 Nov 2014 05:27 PM

A submarine from an unknown country trespassed in Swedish territory, officials announced after diligently searching the coast in the past three weeks.

On Oct. 20, CNN reported that Swedish officials were searching intensively for an "underwater mystery vessel." Officials were apparently notified of the vessel’s presence when an emergency radio call in Russian was picked up in the area, although Russian officials denied any presence in the waters.

On Friday, Swedish officials announced that the vessel was a submarine but “the analysis cannot determine the nationality of the intruder,” CNN said.

"The government considers this to be extraordinary serious," Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said at a press conference. "Those who consider to enter Swedish territory shall understand what huge risks it will mean in the future."

The New York Times said Sweden assimilated reports, including several reports of a “suspicious object” in the waters, which occurred at the same time that the military detected the distress calls from what appeared to be a Russian submarine. On Friday, officials put forth evidence confirming that the vessel was a sub.

“Each of these observations has a high credibility,” the Times quoted a government statement. “Together with other observations, and a confirmed submarine, they generate a pattern.”

The news of the government’s search for the mystery vessel generated conspiracy theories in Sweden, the Times reported, and spawned the tag “the hunt for reds in October” online.
