Street Racer Surrenders in Deaths of 2 LA Bystanders

One of two wanted street racers surrendered to Los Angeles police in the deaths of two men who were struck by a vehicle that lost control while speeding neck-and-neck with another car last week. Another person was seriously injured.

Police booked Henry Michael Gevorgyan, 21, after he turned himself him on Saturday, a police spokesman told KCBS-TV. He is accused of being involved in a street race with another vehicle about 2:15 a.m. Thursday.

Authorities said both vehicles left the scene after the accident, failing to give aid to those injured.

Gevorgyan was identified as the driver of the Mustang that lost control and plowed into the three people, Los Angeles Police Department Cmdr. Andrew Smith told the Los Angeles Times.  Smith said he faces murder charges.

Investigators told the Times that Gevorgyan's Mustang was speeding when it swerved, striking people on the sidewalk. The car then hit the curb and spun 180 degrees after hitting a berm and a utility pole.

Police wouldn't say if the second motorist involved in the alleged race had been identified or apprehended.

KTLA-TV identified the one of the two people killed as Eric Siguenza, 26, who died at the scene. A second person died after he was taken to a hospital but was not identified.

Doctors listed a third person injured in the accident, Luis Antonio Gonzalez, 21, as in serious but stable condition.

Los Angeles Police Department detective Bill Bustos told KTLA-TV that an initial investigation led authorities to believe the drivers were racing at a high rate of speed.

"There's some areas in the San Fernando Valley … that unfortunately some individuals choose to drive fast, putting the public in danger," said Bustos. "Obviously we’re asking them not to do that because these could be the results."

Police told KTLA-TV that they are checking nearby buildings to see if any surveillance video captured the incident.
