A Corvette that was stolen in Detroit more than three decades ago was found and identified in Mississippi, then law enforcement reunited the vehicle with its owner back in the motor city.

George Talley, now 71, told the Free Press he was stunned when he received a call from his insurance company telling him that the vehicle had been found. Talley admitted to the newspaper he initially blew off the information as a joke until he got a follow up call from Michigan State Police.

"I said, 'This isn't no joke. They wouldn't be joking with me because I don't think they have time to play with me,'" Talley said. "I was shocked."

Michigan State Police Lt. Michael A. Shaw told the Free Press that the car was uncovered through an investigation by its Michigan Southwest Commercial Auto Recovery United when someone tried to register two Corvettes under the same VIN number. The police work uncovered Talley's vehicle at a residence in Columbia, Mississippi.

Then, the retired General Motors worker got a second surprise. Tally told a local radio station that he was trying to figure out a way to get to Mississippi to pick it up the vehicle when GM executive Mark Reuss heard the interview on WJR-AM and offered that the company would deliver the vehicle to him for free, according to WXYZ-TV.

"I listened to you this morning," said Reuss, executive vice president of global product development, purchasing and supply chain at General Motors. "We just had to do something."

Mississippi Bureau of Investigation officials said in a statement, according to the Detroit Free Press, that they are continuing to investigate where the vehicle had been through the years, trying to trace ownership over the past three decades.

Shaw told the newspaper that since Talley's insurance claim on the vehicle was never paid to him, the Detroiter remained the rightful owner.

"I made a police report, and I haven't seen it since July of 1981," Talley said to WXYZ-TV.
