Stolen Art Returned to Poland by Son of Nazi Governor

Three stolen art pieces were returned to Poland on Sunday by the son of a Nazi governor in a gesture Polish authorities hope will inspire other Nazi descendants to do the same.

In a ceremony in Krakow, Poland, Horst von Waechter of Austria returned an 18th century map built into a table and two other artworks his mother took from the National Museum in Krakow to decorate his father’s office, according to The Guardian.

The Polish government had long said von Waechter’s mother took the best art and furniture pieces from the museum even though she was told by the museum’s director not to do so, The Guardian reported. The pieces became part of an estimated half million art pieces taken from Poland by Nazi and Soviet forces during World War II.

Von Waechter has been trying to return at least one of the paintings for years, according to The Guardian, but some have been reluctant to have any dealings with a Nazi’s son.

Finally, Polish historian Magdalena Ogorek spotted the objects while interviewing von Waechter about his father for a book she is writing about him, and she decided to try for their return, The Associated Press reported.

“He gave a good example to others and we should be happy about this,” Ogorek said of von Waechter’s action to return the art for no compensation. Von Waechter said he returned the artworks to honor the memory of his mother, the AP reported.

Von Waechter maintains that his father was trapped inside the Nazi war machine rather than being a willing Nazi. Otto Wachter removed about 60,000 Jews from Poland and imprisoned 15,000 more in what became known as the Krakow ghetto during the war, the AP reported.
