Steve Whitmire, the puppeteer for Kermit the Frog, was fired after 27 years of service to “The Muppets” and says he is devastated to have "failed in my duty to my hero."

News that the puppeteer was no longer involved in the show made headlines earlier this week after the fansite ToughPigs first announced it online.

“Several of our readers have noticed clues, forcing us to wonder if Steve was absent from 'The Muppets,'" noted the website adding that, upon approaching the Muppet Studio at Disney for comment, it was confirmed that Whitmire no longer worked with the show and that fellow puppeteer and voice artist, Matt Vogel, would replace him as Kermit.

Now Whitmire has poured his heart out on the matter on his personal blog.

“For me ‘The Muppets’ are not just a job, or a career, or even a passion. They are a calling, an urgent, undeniable, impossible to resist way of life. This is my life’s work since I was 19 years old. I feel that I am at the top of my game, and I want all of you who love the Muppets to know that I would never consider abandoning Kermit or any of the others because to do so would be to forsake the assignment entrusted to me by Jim Henson, my friend and mentor, but even more, my hero.”

Whitmire went on to explain that The Muppet Studio had contacted him in October last year to announce that they were recasting for Kermit the Frog.

“I have remained silent the last nine months in hopes that the Disney Company might reverse their course,” he said.

“Given the opportunity I remain willing to do whatever is required to remedy their concerns because I feel my continued involvement with the characters is in the best interest of the Muppets.”

Whitmire announced that he had created his blog as a way of connecting with fans and sharing all things Muppet-related.

“I just want you all to know that I am sorry if I have disappointed any of you at any point throughout our journey, and to let everyone know that I am devastated to have failed in my duty to my hero.”
