A North Carolina police officer is suing Starbucks after a hot cup of coffee he got for free spilled in his lap three years ago.

Matthew Kohr, of Raleigh, claims he suffered third-degree burns, aggravating his Crohn’s disease and triggering anxiety, The News & Observer reported.

But attorneys for the coffee chain are emphasizing that Kohr failed to receive medical treatment for more than two hours after the 2012 incident. He got his truck from a police garage and drove home to take photographs of the burns before seeking treatment, according to testimony on Wednesday.

The coffee was part of a Starbucks promotion offering free beverages to officers in uniform.

“I wanted to beat my chest and scream,” Kohr said of the spill, according to The News & Observer. “But the place was full of people.”

The incident happened in January 2012, and Kohr said it forced him to take time off of work, resulted in intestinal surgery because of a flare-up in his Crohn’s disease, and interfered with his intimate relationship with his wife, ABC News reported.

Kohr said he and his wife initially considered seeking $10 million before adjusting the number to $750,000.

"It was hard to put a price on what my wife had to go through, what my kids had to go through," Kohr said, according to ABC News. "What's a year and a half, two years of your life worth? I thought it was worth $10 million."

During the trial, Kohr’s doctor, Charles Barish, described the effects of the spill.

"He was completely changed from what he used to be," Barish said, according to WTVD-TV. "He used to live life normally. In March, things were changing. He wasn't able to eat, wasn't able to exercise. Basically, he was becoming an invalid."

Closing arguments in the case are expected to be heard Friday
