A new, free “Star Wars” game available Thursday will bring the force to mobile devices everywhere and encourages players to “crush the rebellion or restore freedom.”

The mobile game is highlighted on Walt Disney Co.’s StarWars.com website and is just one of several ways Walt Disney Co. is promoting the franchise it bought from George Lucas in 2012.

“Star Wars: Commander” will be available on Apple for 30 days and then will become available on Google Inc.’s Android devices, Reuters said. Although the game app is free, crystals can be purchased during play.

Along with going mobile with “Star Wars: Commander,” Disney is releasing an animated movie on Sept. 29, “Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion.” The movie, which will be available online and on Watch Disney XD app, will debut on Disney Channels starting Oct. 3 and a new series will hit Disney XD on Oct. 13.

Disney purchased the “Star Wars” franchise from LucasFilm for $4.05 billion, and numerous products will appearing in an attempt to make that money well spent. From light sabers to Wookiees to "Star Wars" bedding and even healthy foods, products will hit the shelves to inspire a new generation of fans.

The next movie in the franchise, “Star Wars VII,” is scheduled for release in December 2015. The most recent announcement involved the hiring of two little-known actors for the movie after open casting calls across the United States and Britain. Crystal Clarke and Pip Andersen will join the new movie cast members, which include Lupita Nyong’o and Gwendoline Christie.

"This is one of those franchises you just can't overexpose," Peter Sealey, former head of marketing at Columbia Pictures, told Reuters. "You just put the metal to the floor and enjoy the ride."

Fans were excited to give the game a try on Thursday.
