Sprint is laying off 2,000 employees as the company tries to cut costs after posting a $765 million net loss in its most recent quarter.

During the past year, the company, which is based in the Kansas City suburb of Overland Park, has cut about 7,000 jobs, or 18 percent of its workforce, the Kansas City Business Journal reported.

The layoffs are expected to save the company about $400 million a year, The New York Times reported. The company expects to cut $1.5 billion in costs next year.

The nation’s No. 3 wireless carrier brought in a new CEO, Marcelo Claure, in August to lead a turnaround at the company, CNN reported.

"We have started a transformational journey," Claure said in a statement. "While the company continues to face headwinds, we have begun the first phase of our plan and are encouraged with the early results."

Among Claure’s efforts, the company introduced new pricing structures, including a new unlimited data plan for smartphone users that costs $60 and a family pricing structure that would cost a family with four phone lines $160 per month to share 20GB of data.

Sprint, which lost 272,000 contract wireless subscribers in the third quarter, also named Junichi Miyakawa as technical chief operating officer on Friday, Reuters reported.

"We've decided to make some leadership changes. More changes are coming," Claure said of the moves.

"[Claure] has to cut costs, that’s the easiest away to show he is doing something overall," Roger Entner, analyst at Recon Analytics, told Reuters. "He needs to get aggressive with pricing to attract more customers, but most importantly he needs a better network."
