Spain's El Gordo Lottery Splits $3B Between Thousands of Winners

Spain's El Gordo lottery, the world's biggest lottery, made thousands of people nearly $500,000 richer after the $3 billion payoff was divided between them.

About 100 of the winning tickets for the Spanish Christmas lottery were sold in an upper-middle-class neighborhood in Madrid, and people were opening champagne in the streets to celebrate their winnings.

"The first thing I'll do is take my 5-year-old daughter to the Disney theme park in Paris," Joana Lizcano, 28, told The Associated Press. "Then I'll pay the debts I have and try to buy an apartment with my husband."

The El Gordo lottery doesn’t offer one large jackpot, but instead pays out prizes to thousands of people.

During a four-hour show, school children sang out the winning numbers; one girl was so anxious about it, she started crying.

“Can you imagine the pressure with nearly $3 billion at stake? Every single human being in Spain was watching that show," "Good Morning America" anchor Amy Robach said.

The popular lottery has spawned numerous stories, including one about “the world’s unluckiest man” from 2011. Costis Mitsotakis was the only man in his small village not to share in the lottery winnings in 2011. He made a documentary about the situation, but the Greek filmmaker said he was not unlucky.

“It was like a gift from heaven, as if someone had given me the perfect script,” he told The Guardian. He has spent three years making the film, which is about everyone (but him) in the village buying tickets from the housewives’ association, all with the same number. The movie is called “Cuando Toco,” or “When Touched.”
