Sofia Vergara ignited a firestorm of controversy after she appeared on a rotating pedestal in what many deemed a "sexist" stunt during Monday night's Emmy Awards telecast.

The 42-year-old "Modern Family" star posed like a human statue as Bruce Rosenblum, the President of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, gave a speech on entertainment diversity.

"What truly matters is that we never forget that our success is based on always giving the viewers something compelling to watch," Rosenblum said as Vergara preened and modeled, spinning around like a sports car on display.

The gag immediately ruffled feathers amongst Twitter users and entertainment bloggers.

"If anything, the Emmy show itself proved how far we are from a place of gender equality," The Huffington Post wrote. "During the Television Academy president's speech about diversity on TV, Sofia Vergara was literally showcased as 'something compelling to look at' on a rotating, elevated pedestal. Nothing quite undermines a man's message of improved representation like a woman simultaneously being objectified one step to his right."

Vergara later defended the stunt in comments to Entertainment Weekly.

"I think it's absolutely the opposite [of sexist]," she said backstage. "It means that somebody can be hot and also be funny and make fun of herself. I think it’s ridiculous that somebody started this — I know who she was — who has no sense of humor [and should] lighten up a little bit."

It's not clear who exactly Vergara believes started the sexist complaints.
