Smart Cars Tipped in San Francisco: Popular Prank Becomes Full-on Trend

By    |   Monday, 09 Jun 2014 07:07 AM

Another rash of Smart Car tippings broke out in San Francisco on Thursday night, with two of the vehicles targeted in the Twin Peaks and Cole Valley neighborhoods.

Owners of the cars awoke to knocks on their doors early Friday morning, as police told them their cars had been damaged and, in one case, rolled into the middle of the street, KTVU 2 San Francisco reported.

"Is this a bunch of kids that have nothing to do — do something positive, it’s ridiculous," said one of the car owners, Albert Viana. His car had to be towed after sustaining a smashed side mirror, a broken window, as well as dents and scratches.

"If it's been flipped on its side, there's a question of the alignment being messed up," he said. "The whole driver's side is scratched up. You can see all the body panels shifting off the car. There was oil leaking out if it."

The cars, which weigh a mere 1,600 pounds, are easily tipped over, and some have likened the vandalism to cow tipping — albeit with more expensive consequences.

The recent tippings come just two months after four of the cars were flipped onto their sides and backs within a 10-block radius of a different neighborhood not far from the recent incidents.

Officers from the San Francisco police department said car tipping could be considered felony vandalism. They took fingerprints where they could find them, but said the closest they've ever come to a description of the perpetrators are reports that they wear black hoodie sweatshirts.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the pranks began in 2009 in Amsterdam, where some of the cars were tipped into canals. Smart Cars were soon after targeted in Canada in 2011, and ever since have spread to cities in the U.S.

Some residents in San Francisco suspect the Smart Cars are being targeted because to some they are symbols of a San Francisco that has been heavily gentrified by the technology boom in nearby Silicon Valley.
