Slavyansk, a city in eastern Ukraine, and the nearby town of Kramatorsk, have apparently become the focal point of the Ukrainian military's attempt to push back separatists aligned with Russia and return control of parts of the nation's eastern region to the Kiev-based government.

On Friday, Ukrainian military gunships and armored vehicles supported ground forces as they advanced on the rebel-held city, which consists of approximately 160,000 inhabitants, and surrounding suburbs, pushing through nine roadblocks that had been set up by separatists, the Agence France-Presse reported.

According to the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, one Russian separatist was killed and another wounded in Slavyansk, CNN reported.

Slavyansk's self-appointed rebel mayor, Vyacheslav Ponomaryov claimed the death toll was higher, telling local media outlets that five pro-Russian activists and two civilians were killed in the Slavyansk assault by the Ukrainian military, CNN noted. The death toll could not be confirmed.

"We are being stormed, we have got casualties. I'm asking children, women and the elderly not to leave their homes and I ask armed men to provide us all the assistance they can," Ponomaryov reportedly said. "I think we will be able to successfully stand up for our city. Thank you for your attention, thank you for your assistance, we will win."

"We will defend the town and we will win," Ponomaryov added.

Ponomaryov'S fervor was reflected by his constituents who attempted to use their bodies as human shields to stop the military's advance, with one pro-Russian Ukrainian woman telling the AFP, "We are ready to block the way with our bodies if we need to."

The Ukrainian military's advance into the city stopped short of breaching the rebel's headquarters which had been set up in Slavyansk's city hall.

Ukrainian's Interior Minister Arsen Avakov defended the use of force in a Facebook post on Friday that read, "The terrorists opened fire at Ukrainian units with some heavy guns, including grenade launchers and portable air defense systems."

Earlier in the day, two Ukrainian military officers were killed and several others were wounded when separatists successfully shot down two Mi24 helicopters.
