Skinny Jeans Hospitalized Woman Who Had to Be Cut Out of Pants

Skinny jeans got a woman hospitalized earlier this week in Australia after her ankles began to swell and feel weak.

The 35-year-old was helping a family member move and, when she endured "many hours of squatting while emptying cupboards," her pants became considerably uncomfortable, according to a report published online Monday in the journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry.

She “recalled that her jeans had felt increasingly tight and uncomfortable during the day,” ABC News added.

The fashion victim’s feet then grew numb and she later fell to the ground while walking home. The woman was found a few hours later and taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital. Medical personnel had to cut the woman out of her jeans, NPR reported.

The doctors discovered that the woman’s tight jeans caused compartment syndrome, a condition in which the muscles or nerves swell, leading to a blockage of blood flow. The woman had no remaining strength in her toes and ankles even though her hips and knees were unaffected, NPR noted. A CT scan of the woman’s legs indicated muscle damage in her calves.

"The wearing of 'skinny' jeans had likely potentiated the tibial neuropathies by causing a compartment syndrome as the lower leg swelled," according to the journal report.

“Once the leg starts to swell, the train has left the station,” Dr. Roy Buchinsky, director of Wellness at the University Hospitals Case Medical Center, told ABC News. “That’s the sign the muscles are really going to be inflamed and the pressure is way too much,” he said.

The woman was given an IV and put on bed rest. She left the hospital, able to walk, just four days later. The woman was fortunate, as serious cases of compartment syndrome can lead to surgery or even amputation.
