Sizzler Ad From 1991 Is a Gloriously Cheesy 'Patriotic Fever Dream'

A Sizzler ad from 1991 has gone viral across social media sites, and some bemused commenters have said it's like a patriotic fever dream.

"Pitching themselves as the family restaurant, the five-minute video shows kids playing baseball, cowboys, sailors, middle-aged joggers, and, for some inexplicable reason, a guy who looks like the Sea Captain from 'The Simpsons,'" wrote The Daily Beast of the clip, which resurfaced on social news site Reddit for no apparent reason.

"Add to that the ad’s sweeping anthem ('Sizzler is the choice of America!') and you’ve got an ad so pro-USA that it makes Reagan’s 'Morning in America' look like a Marxist rant."

Eater.com concluded that the video is "somehow patriotic, cinematic, sweet, and profoundly creepy, all at the same time."

About the only thing missing from the five-minute montage is a soaring bald eagle.

After the video neared a million views on YouTube, some Internet denizens on Reddit began to wonder why Sizzler would produce such a long commercial.

That's when reporters at The Huffington Post reached out to Sizzler's executive team, who revealed that the video was actually used to sell franchises, and was also shown at the annual company meeting for inspiration.

"We’re very humbled by the thousands of wonderful posts from our customers," Kristina Van Bruggen, Sizzler USA vice president of marketing, said in an email on Wednesday. "Sizzler is and has always been a special place for American families. We are thrilled this video is touching so many people and stirring such positive feelings about our country. Sizzle on, America, sizzle on!"
