Simone Veil has died at age 89, but the French politician who survived the Holocaust leaves behind a surviving legacy for women’s rights in the 21st century.

Veil, who was instrumental in the legalization of contraception and abortion in France and also served as president in European parliament, died at her home on Friday, according to The Guardian.

Simon was born in Nice on July 13, 1927, but was later deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau with her mother, Yvonne, and sister, Madelaine.

According to the Jewish Women’s Archive, only the daughters survived and were liberated on January 27, 1945.

She obtained a diploma in law and political science and, in 1954, she received the title of magistrate.

Veil campaigned tirelessly for legislation allowing abortion to be passed despite being greeted with hostility and aggression.

“It came from all sides, from members of the parliament on the floor to anonymous letters to her office and her home,” stated the Jewish Women’s Archive. “The most abhorrent remarks even compared the legalization of abortion to the Holocaust. The anonymous attacks included swastikas painted on her car and the elevator in her building and letters condemning her children to hell.”

However, in 1975, the bill was passed.

Veil achieved numerous successes both professionally and personally.

Her career spans decades and has seen her thrive in numerous governmental roles, where she used her position to effect change.

She has also actively been involved in a number of groups, including the Foundation for the Memory of the Shoah and Foundation of Science and Culture in Europe, and has been the recipient of several awards.

Since news of Simon’s death, social media has been flooded with messages of sympathy.

Taking to Twitter, French president Emmanuel Macron expressed his sentiments:

“Very strong condolences to the family of Simone Veil. May her example inspire our countrymen, who will find the best of France,” he posted.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Édouard Philippe tweeted:

“Simone Veil will remain the face of a Republic standing, human, generous. The France loses a personality as history offers little.”
