Shark Tubing Woman: 22-Year-Old Attacked, Slapped in Face With Fin

A shark attacked a 22-year-old woman who was tubing on a Florida inlet Sunday, biting her on the leg and slapping her in the face with its fin.

"It was really scary. Before we went out, I said I don't like going into the water . . . when I can't see what's down there," Jessica Vaughn told reporters from ABC News while receiving treatment at the Broward Health Medical Center. "I've always had feelings of something down under there because of the dark murky waters."

Vaughn said she was swimming on her back when the shark bit the lower part of her right leg, and slapped her in the face with its tail fin in the process.

"At first I felt like something punched my leg. I thought a fish bit me. Then I saw my leg was cut open. I realized it wasn't a fish," she said.

"It came up from behind her and bit her leg and then kind of smacked its tail and most of its body out of the water, hit her in the face actually, and took off," said her friend Peter Hogge.

Hogge and friends were able to pull Vaughn back into the boat, and put pressure on the gash, which had gone down to the bone.

Timothy Heiser, deputy fire chief at Fort Lauderdale Fire Department, said Vaughn's friends likely saved her life by stopping the bleeding immediately. Upon returning to the dock, the friends called for help and a neighbor called 911.

The department tweeted and retweeted photos of the graphic wound, as well as photos of Vaughn's recovery in subsequent days.

Doctors reported to NBC News that they expect Vaughn to recover fully in the next three to four months.

Vaughn herself was in good spirits when meeting with reporters, even making jokes about the incident while eating "Shark Bites" fruit snacks.
