Shark! Florida Beach Pier Fisherman Loses Catch as Swimmers Gawk

A 6-foot shark on a Jacksonville, Florida, beach sent swimmers scrambling out of the water, and it looks as if a fisherman on a nearby pier set the shark free after almost reeling it in.

The fisherman, who spoke to CNN affiliate WJXT but was not identified by name, said he was ordered to release the shark as he battled to bring it in.

Some piers allow fishermen to catch sharks, but the one at Jacks Beach does not, and police issued the fisherman a verbal warning for endangering the public, WJXT said.

"I was told by law enforcement officers and lifeguards to do not touch the shark and to let it go," the fisherman told WJXT. He had been hoping to sell what he thought was a bull shark for $15.99 a pound.

“I’ve been waiting for a long time to catch something that size, to be able to land it and keep it for my own, and I definitely feel that was kind of taken from me,” the man said.

ClickOrlando reported that two shark fins may have been spotted in the water by the pier on Monday, and that once the initial panic subsided, everyone crowded around to take photos.

"The second they told us there was a shark, everybody swam to the water because they were like oh my God cool a shark so everybody got in but the shark swam into the ocean. It was awesome," Nicole Toolan told ClickOrlando.

“Instead of everybody running away, everybody is coming to the water, we're checking it out, we're pretty close to it,” Admir Osmanovic told the website. “It was pretty cool, you know. First time ever seeing a shark in 15 years living in Jacksonville. I liked it. It was awesome.”
