Shark Attack in North Carolina Sixth One In June Biting Frenzy

By    |   Monday, 29 Jun 2015 08:01 AM

The sixth shark attack off the Carolina coast this month injured a 17-year-old boy who was bitten in the buttocks, calf and hands while in the water in the Outer Banks near Waves, North Carolina.

The boy, who was not identified in media reports, was transported to a hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, by helicopter after the Saturday shark attack, according to CBS News.

In a separate shark attack on Friday morning, a 47-year-old man was bitten about a mile north of a fishing pier in Avon, North Carolina, reported CNN. The National Park Service said the man had been swimming with others when he was bitten on his right leg and lower back.

The man was taken to a Norfolk hospital by helicopter after the Hatteras Island Rescue Squad paramedics and National Park Service Rangers treated him at the scene.

"It's very common this time of year between Florida and the Carolinas to have these sorts of incidents," Ocearch founder Chris Fischer told "CBS This Morning" regarding the shark attacks. "We're at the peak of abundance. In the Carolinas, there's the maximum amount of bait, maximum amount of game fish there, which brings the predators in."

On June 14, Hunter Treschl 16, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Kiersten Yow, 12, of Archdale, North Carolina, lost limbs after they were involved in separate shark attacks on the same stretch of beach in Oak Island, North Carolina, reported USA Today.

Both Treschl and Yow were in waist-deep water when they were attacked on the beach about 30 minutes south of Wilmington. Yow was attacked about 4:10 p.m. and Treschl was attacked less than two hours later.
