Shanice Clark, forward on the women’s basketball team at California University of Pennsylvania, died early Sunday morning after possibly choking on chewing gum.

According to Pennsylvania's Observer-Reporter, Clark, 21, was found unresponsive at her Vulcan Village apartment at 3:03 a.m. and rushed to Monongahela Valley Hospital. She could not be revived, and was pronounced dead at 4:10 a.m.

California Borough police said an initial medical report listed aspiration of chewing gum as a factor in the death – likely by accident, while sleeping. The exact cause of death will likely be declared upon the conducting of an autopsy.

"Our thoughts today are with the family of Shanice Clark, a senior from Ontario, Canada, who passed away early this morning," interim university president Geraldine M. Jones said in a statement.

"On behalf of California University of Pennsylvania, I extend my deepest sympathy to all of Shanice’s family and friends. She will be missed by her teammates and coaches, her classmates, and by the entire campus community."

Yahoo Sports reported that the 6-foot-tall Clark was a communications major, and had hoped to work in broadcasting upon graduating.

She is survived by her mother, Kashaeka Fearon, and one sister.

Clark was "a bright student and talented player" according to athletic director Karen Hjerpe, who added that "her smile and personality will be missed."
