Senzo Meyiwa, goalkeeper and team captain of South Africa's national soccer team, was killed in a robbery attempt Sunday night at his girlfriend's house as he attempted to apprehend the intruders.

The New York Times reported that the nation was in mourning for the 27-year-old on Monday, with President Jacob Zuma expressing grief and anger over the tragic incident.

"Leave no stone unturned in finding his killers and bring them to justice," he said in a public order to the police force. "Words cannot express the nation’s shock at this loss."

An official of the province, Sizakele Nkosi-Malubane, told reporters that "two guys entered the house and demanded cellphones, money, and other valuables. Meyiwa tried to protect [his girlfriend] Kelly because one of the men had a gun pointed toward her."

Tumelo Waka Madlala, a friend who said he was present during the robbery, reported that he and Meyiwa tried to stop the intruders.

"As they were running away we tried to stop them and that is when they shot him at point blank range," he told The Associated Press.

A single shot killed Meyiwa when it was fired through his chest. He was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

Police have offered a reward of nearly $23,000 for more information leading to the arrest of Meyiwa's killers.

"Most of the time, these things come when you least expect," said coach Mashaba with tears running down his cheeks. "We're going to miss Senzo a lot . . . never mind his saving goals."

South Africa has one of the world's highest murder rates, reported The Times.
