Seattle Marijuana Vending Machines to Debut at Dispensaries

Seattle installed its first marijuana vending machines on Tuesday, dispensing pot-infused drinks and snacks to patrons.

Reuters reported that the ZaZZZ machine, built by Arizona-based American Green, is located inside Seattle Caregivers medical marijuana dispensary. It is being called the first such vending machine that can verify a person's age and identity via a state-issued ID.

"You're swiping your ID, we've got a variety of different ways we can check that ID against who's standing in front of the machine. And as we like to say, if there's any doubt, no cannabis comes out," said Stephen Shearin with American Green.

Shearin said that in addition to verifying your ID though a swipe, a camera on the vending machine can match your face to your ID picture, and a mat in front of the machine can match your weight to the ID.

After the state's passage of a law legalizing recreation marijuana that took effect last year, some legislators are hoping to align the medical marijuana industry with the recreational industry — which still run separately, side-by-side. If all goes as planned, new laws could see many medical marijuana shops become recreational pot shops.

The first ZaZZZ machine was installed in Colorado last April, but Shearin said that the machine in Seattle is a newer, upgraded generation of the machine. He also said California, Michigan, Rhode Island, Alaska, and other states that allow for the sale of medical marijuana will soon be getting the machines.
