Seattle Ad: Airbus Plane Photo Mistakenly Used to Woo Boeing

By    |   Thursday, 21 Nov 2013 06:52 PM

Oops. A Seattle Chamber of Commerce ad mistakenly featured an Airbus plane in a full-page spot that was supposed to be encouraging Boeing to build in Washington, The Seattle Times reports.

The state is waging a campaign to get Boeing to locate its 777X jet production in the state, and has passed $8.7 billion in tax breaks to make it happen. But the deal is iffy as the machinists union rejected the Boeing contract, which means competition may come from elsewhere to land the deal.

In an effort to make things happen, the Washington Aerospace Partnership, which is a group of leaders working to grow the aerospace industry, placed the ad in The Seattle Times, the Times said, stating boldly atop the plane photo, “The Future of Washington.”

Unfortunately, someone dropped the ball, putting in a picture of an Airbus A319.

The Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce was responsible for placing the ad as part of the Aerospace Partnership.

“It’s an embarrassing, cringe-worthy error,” a chamber spokeswoman told the Times.

Reuters contacted Airbus, who refused to comment except to confirm that was indeed their plane pictured. Others are just concerned that such a mistake might impact negotiations with Boeing.

"It's too bad that they made that mistake," David Groves, spokesman for the Washington State Labor Council, told Reuters. "Hopefully it doesn't undermine the good work the Aerospace Partnership is trying to do."

Boeing began talking to other states about possible locations for their new production after the machinists voted the contract down 2 to 1 last week.
