Sean Hayes Blames NBC for Low 'Sean Saves the World' Ratings (Video)

Sean Hayes, the actor who rose to fame for his role as Jack on "Will & Grace," blames NBC for the low ratings of his recently premiered comedy series "Sean Saves the World."

"To me, [the show] is working," Hayes, 43, told TheTVPage.com Wednesday. "It’s just the struggle of the elephant in the room which is 'how do you get viewers to NBC?’ NBC programs great shows, it just doesn’t have the eyeballs CBS does."

But Hayes is wrong … kind of. While CBS does have more viewers overall — 11.4 million viewers on average compared to NBC's 9.9 million — the peacock network is actually leading in the key 18-49 demographic, according to Yahoo's The Wrap.

"Sean Saves the World," a sitcom about a divorced gay father who's raising his 14-year-old daughter, premiered Oct. 3 but is averaging just 3.4 million viewers. Among adults 18-49, the show garnered a measly 1.3 rating, the same as the recently cancelled NBC drama "Ironside."

One critic at TVByTheNumbers even predicted that "Sean" is "certain to be canceled by May 2014."

But Hayes is confident and has something to say to the naysayers who have given his show bad reviews.

"'Will & Grace' got those. 'Big Bang Theory' got those. 'Friends' got those. They all did. 'Seinfeld' got horrible reviews," he said. "I think critics like to associate themselves with cool, hip things and multi-cams feel retro to them. To me, whatever’s funny is funny. So if they don’t think it’s funny, that’s one thing. But I think they get nervous because they want their name on something new and hip and cool, and a lot of times they associate that with single-cam shows because those are the du jour format. This format isn’t that so they get scared."
