The 20-year-old driver was taken to the hospital and was in criticial condition with severe burns and broken bones, The Associated Press reported.

Porsche Motorsport said the accident happened at Queensland Raceway outside of Brisbane.

Edwards was the Supercup Championship leader and was planning to return to England for the final two races of the season. His last Twitter post read: “Time to hit Queensland Raceway today, should be fun, hope there aren’t too many kangaroos like at Bathurst!” – which the AP noted was a reference to last weekend’s endurance race.

Twitter was flowing with messages of condolences, including many from professional racers.

The Independent said Edwards was seen as one of Britain’s best young talents. He played the role of his father, former Formula One driver Guy Edwards, in Ron Howard’s move “Rush,” which focuses on the rivalry between Niki Lauda and James Hunt during the 1976 Grand Prix season. Guy Edwards was one of the drivers who pulled Lauda from his burning car after it crashed during the German Grand Prix.

Veteran racer Allan McNish told The Independent that he had followed the younger Edwards for years and was friends with his father.

“I would say this was probably his strongest year in racing,” McNish said. “This was a breakthrough year for him. He was showing what talent he had, but had maybe never had the opportunity to actually display it. Apart from that, he was a guy who loved life, loved cycling, was strong and fit.”

Police have not determined the cause of the crash that demolished the front of the car.

“With the impact of the vehicle at speed, you could imagine the crunching that would occur and the amount of damage that was caused,” Queensland Police Detective Dave Preston told The Independent.
