Saudi Woman Arrested: Soccer Game Attendee Wasn't Supposed to Be There

A Saudi woman was arrested Friday for attending a soccer game after authorities said they caught her dressed as a man and sneaking into the stadium, where only men are allowed.

The unidentified woman, arrested at the Al-Jawhara Stadium in Jeddah, contended that she didn’t know only men were allowed to attend the games, The Associated Press said.

AFP reported that the woman’s presence was “documented” on YouTube, showing her sitting in an empty section of the stadium that was for the visiting team fans.

"A man nearby appears to be looking intently at the woman who sported glasses and black attire," AFP said. "She seemed to be wearing a large hat with a scarf in Al-Shabab's black and white colors for the match against Jeddah's Al-Ittihad."

AFP said the woman bought her ticket online.

Women in Saudi Arabia are required to wear a veil to cover their hair and faces, and also to wear an abaya, a loose black dress, when they’re out in public.

The AP, quoting a Saudi Arabian newspaper, said the woman has been held in custody, but has not yet been charged.

“Ultraconservative Saudi clerics shun female access to exercise and women's teams are not part of the kingdom's federation that oversees sports,” AP wrote. “Women often struggle to find facilities to train and are not allowed to attend matches in stadiums.”

At least one commenter on the Saudi Gazette website wrote that the woman should be punished for knowingly attempting to deceive authorities by dressing as a man and violating rules. But in general, online comments were from people upset at the restriction of women’s rights in the country.
