Sargento Foods has expanded its cheese recall that is connected to an Indiana-based supplier.

Sargento, based out of Plymouth, Wisconsin, announced that it has ended its relationship with Deutsch Kase Haus, in Middlebury, Indiana, after a potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination sparked a recall, BizTimes Milwaukee noted.

Sargento and a second retailer connected with Deutsch Kase Haus, Michigan-based Meijer, both announced recalls on Feb. 10 of Colby and Colby Jack cheeses sourced from the supplier, BizTimes reported. Seven other companies also have announced recalls of cheese products in the past week.

"We deeply regret any inconvenience or concern this issue has caused," Sargento Foods chief executive officer Louie Gentine said in a statement when the recall expansion was announced on Feb. 17.

"We have high expectations for the quality and safety of our products and hold our suppliers accountable to those same standards. We will continue to evaluate our processes to ensure we remain a leader in food safety and quality," he added.

Listeriosis is a serious infection usually caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Roughly 1,600 people get listeriosis each year, and about 260 die.
