Sarah Koenig: Colbert, Bought by Flattery, Says She's 'Favorite Guest'

Stephen Colbert, winding through the last episodes of his current show, declared Wednesday that Sarah Koenig, who hosts the popular podcast “Serial,” is his “favorite guest of all time.”

“Serial,” a true-crime story, has been downloaded more than 5 million times since it began in October, The Los Angeles Times said.

Colbert handed off his “favorite guest” honor to Koenig after she answered one simple question.

“What does it mean to have the most popular podcast in history?" Colbert asked."What is the benefit of doing this?" he continued.

"Well, I'm here," Koenig answered.

Obviously, Colbert can be bought with flattery.

"You're my favorite guest of all time right now," he said.

“Serial” is an episodic investigation of the murder case of Hae Min Lee, which occurred 15 years ago. The last of its 12 episodes will go online Dec. 18, the same date of Colbert’s last "Colbert Report" on Comedy Central. The podcast has raised questions about whether Adnan Syed, serving life for the murder, is guilty. The second season of “Serial” will cover a different story.

Koenig has risen to fame from the “Serial” podcast, and she is tweeted about on a regular basis.

Koenig told The New York Times that she wasn’t sure the podcast would take off like it did, and she’s not sure why it’s so popular.

“I haven’t thought about it that much,” Koenig said. “I’m just doing the story and trying not to drown in it. I think a lot of the popularity is coming from the subject matter, the fact that it is a crime story.”
