With the Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone set to go on sale April 21 in the United States, Canada, and home South Korea, the company hopes to make customers forget about the troubles with the Galaxy Note 7.

The Galaxy S8, which will come in two versions, was launched at a media event in New York on Wednesday, with 6.2-inch and 5.8-inch curved screens, Reuters noted. Samsung is hoping that the smartphone will help it regain the market share in lost late last year.

"We must be bold enough to step into the unknown and humble enough to learn from our mistakes," Koh Dong-jin, the company's mobile chief, said, according to Reuters.

Samsung halted sales of Galaxy Note 7 smartphones in October after a failed recall attempt, costing it about $5.5 billion in profit along with a blow to its reputation.

Following a string of incidents where the batteries of the Galaxy Note 7 reportedly caught fire, Samsung issued an official statement in October saying that it has asked all carriers to stop sales of the phone, and that all Galaxy Note 7 users should power down their phones and either get refunds or replace their devices as soon as possible, noted the tech website Digital Trends.

Replacement phones proved troublesome as well, with one reportedly catching fire on a Southwest Airlines flight and another exploding in the pocket of a woman in Taiwan, noted Digital Trends.

USA Today wrote last year that more than a million phones were recalled in the United States alone.

According to The Verge, the Galaxy S8 will be able to capture eight-megapixel photos with an f/1.7 lens with auto-focus capabilities, have fast face scanning recognition, the ability to give its owners a "desktop experience," called DeX.

"The revolutionary design of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ begins from the inside out," Samsung said on its website. "We rethought every part of the phone's layout to break through the confines of the smartphone screen. So all you see is pure content and no bezel. It's the biggest, most immersive screen on a Galaxy smartphone of this size. And it's easy to hold in one hand."
