Sam Simon, 'Simpsons' Co-Creator and Philanthropist, Dies at 59

By    |   Tuesday, 10 Mar 2015 09:28 AM

Sam Simon, who created "The Simpsons" with Matt Groening and James L. Brooks in the late 1980s, passed away Sunday at his home following a three-year battle with colon cancer. He was 59.

ABC News reported that Simon received nine Emmys during a storied career that included work on "The Drew Carey Show," "Cheers," and "Taxi."

Simon left "The Simpsons" after its fourth season, and dedicated his life to charity, directing much of his approximately $100 million fortune to animal welfare organizations.

In 2002, he founded the non-profit Sam Simon Foundation, which trained shelter dogs to assist the disabled.

The organization wrote this week on its Facebook page that Simon "passed away peacefully in his own bed, in his own home, surrounded by people and a dog who loved him."

In a 2013 interview on comedian Marc Maron’s podcast, Simon spoke of his wealth, saying he had "given most of it away" after being diagnosed with cancer in 2012, and given three months to live.

Simon was a Los Angeles native who grew up in Beverly Hills, right across the street from Groucho Marx, The New York Times reported.

In addition to his philanthropic life and Hollywood career, Simon was a competitive poker player, a frequent guest on Howard Stern’s radio show, once managed the boxer Lamon Brewster, and had a brief marriage to a Playboy model.
