Sam Simon, co-creator of "The Simpsons," is opening up about his fight with terminal colon cancer and his decision to give his $100 million personal fortune to charity.

Simon, 59, was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2012 and told he had three to six months to live.

While acknowledging the difficulty of his cancer fight, Simon told Maria Shriver of NBC News that he’s never been happier.

"I ended up surrounded by people that love me and take care of me and would do anything for me. It’s a good feeling. That's called happiness."

Simon called PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk "one of the most influential people in my life." Much of his charitable giving supports animal welfare. His Sam Simon Foundation aids animals and also feeds 400 families a day in Los Angeles.

Newkirk planned a series of animal liberations and actions that Simon takes part in.

"It was almost a therapy for me," he told Shriver.

Simon drew cartoons for the San Francisco Chronicle and San Francisco Examiner and wrote for "Taxi" before joining "The Simpsons" team, The Washington Post reported.

"Cancer has been a fight. It’s been an adventure," Simon told Shriver. "It’s been an education. It’s been the most amazing experience of my life."

Twitter expressed support for Simon.
