Salma Hayek isn’t in front of the cameras much, and the actress said bluntly this week that it's because the Hollywood studios "don’t want me."

"But I don’t really care," the actress added in a recent interview with The Associated Press. "I’ve been getting awards from different places for the humanitarian work and I’ve had a lot of movies come out. Then there is my husband [French billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault] also who takes me to many places. There’s that stuff too and I’ve just been busy with life."

The 49-year-old actress recently produced and voiced a character in “The Prophet,” an animated film based on Kahlil Gibran’s book of the same name, the AP said. It was a project that tapped into her love for her daughter, 7-year-old Valentina Pinault.

"It’s meaningful. It’s hopeful. It’s uplifting. It’s respectful. It honors children, " Hayek said. "Many people tell me, ‘But they are not going to like poetry.’ Children love poetry. That’s why we have the nursery rhymes and then we don’t give it to them anymore. It’s their first language. They think in metaphor."

Hayek opened up to Entertainment Weekly recently also about the difference between her role as an actress and that of producer, which she has taken on more often in recent years.

"Well, Salma the producer works a lot more for a lot less, " Hayek told the entertainment publication, laughing. "I think it’s much easier just to show up and act, but sometimes it’s not as rewarding. I like to do things that go beyond your limitations as a human being, especially as a producer. This movie ['The Prophet'] is the perfect example because its art is created from drawing, poetry, and music. It’s completely free. Not a single person contained its message."

"The Prophet" opens Friday in the United States. It opened already in Lebanon, and Hayek told EW, "We beat [‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’] in its second week in Lebanon. We came out at the same time. I was recently in Venice and about five people from Lebanon stopped me and they all said the same thing. They said ‘The spirit of the country changed after this movie arrived.’ And that’s pretty major."
