Sahara Sam's 'Amber Alert': NJ Water Park Promo Goes Astray

By    |   Monday, 02 Jun 2014 09:44 AM

New Jersey water park Sahara Sam's Oasis sent out a promotional email Thursday night that included a play on the words "Amber Alert" — the child abduction alert system — angering many recipients for its insensitivity.

"I think it is disgusting that someone would approve this being sent to hundreds of customers of theirs when they cater to kids," said one commenter, Ken Hysore, according to ABC New York.

The email included the subject line "sAMBER ALERT: Your Kids Should Be Here," according to Philly.com.

One email recipient, Billie Bakhshi said in response, "Amber alerts?! Really? As an advertising gimmick? Smh [shaking my head] . . . and taking my 'like' and business elsewhere."

"Do you know what an Amber Alert is, you idiots?? I read these, as they are very important. How clever of you to put a small 's' in front of AMBER ALERT to refer to your Mascot Sam — so I would be tricked [into] opening your ad," wrote Scott Borsky on Facebook.

Sahara Sam's management team responded to the criticism after facing the backlash, issuing a statement on its Facebook page.

"We are deeply sorry for sending the email newsletter tonight in error which used a play on words in reference to the amber alert system. The email subject line was NOT approved for circulation and, in trying to be creative during testing, our team made an error which may have resulted in a segment of our newsletter subscribers receiving this correspondence," it wrote.

"We realized this mistake and quickly reacted. Our entire staff sincerely apologizes for any offense this may have caused. In closing, we stand behind our commitment to educating children and their safety."
