Kenneth "Papaw" Harmon, dubbed “Sad Grandpa” by many Internet commentators, has explained the story behind the viral image of him hosting a meal most of his six grandchildren failed to show up for.

"Everyone was invited but that is not the way it turned out," the Oklahoma grandfather told Inside Edition. "Some of the grandkids say they didn't know about it."

Granddaughter Kelsey posted the image of her grandfather on Twitter on March 16, saying she was the only one among Harmon’s six grandchildren who showed up to share the burgers he prepared for them.

The image quickly went viral, spurring an outpouring of support for Harmon, criticism of his grandchildren, countless memes, and visits to grandparents. It had been shared more than 175,000 times and had more than 287,000 likes by midday Monday.

Known as “papaw” by his grandchildren, Harmon is now spending time with those who missed the family meal. He joined grandson Brock Harmon in attending a ball game to watch another grandchild, for instance, it was reported.

Harmon is also smartly taking advantage of his instant social media celebrity, with a planned cookout to raise money for his grandchildren’s college education, the Daily Mail reported.

The family plans to sell burgers and T-shirts that read, “I had a burger with papaw.”

Some people have even booked flights to Oklahoma to attend the cookout.

The cookout event is planned at a flea market owned by the family, KVUE-TV reported.

"Hopefully, people come in, eat, get their pictures taken, hang out for thirty minutes or so and be courteous enough to make room for other people to show up," Harmon told the station.

Grandson Brock Harmon posted about the cookout on Twitter.

The announcement was met with enthusiasm and concern on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Kelsey Harmon continues to try to set the record straight, repeating her statement: “Thank you so much to everyone who was once concerned. All the tweets and posts are truly appreciated. Papaw is great. Please know he is loved deeply, and now widely.”
