Roy Moore's Son Arrested for Drugs; AL Chief Justice Has No Comment

The son of Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore, who is at the center of a same-sex marriage tug-of-war in the state, was arrested Sunday in Troy, Alabama, on drug charges.

WSFA-TV reported that 24-year-old Caleb Moore was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana — second-degree charges — after police confronted him and several others while responding to a break-in call.

Troy police officers came in contact with Moore and four other men around 2:30 p.m. Sunday during their investigation, smelled marijuana, and found a plastic bag allegedly containing the substance and four Xanax pills in a glove box.

Police said the bag was on top of a wallet with Moore's passport inside, WSFA reported. He was later released on a total of $8,500 in bonds for the controlled substance and marijuana possession charges.

Judge Moore declined comment through Scott Hoyem, a spokesman for the Alabama Administrative Office of Courts.

Caleb Moore blamed the charges and arrest on the media and "crooked police" who don't like his father or his position on gay marriage, according to AL.com.

"This is nothing more than a prime example of how media and crooked police officers and critics of my dad try to not only destroy his career for what he stands for but will go as far as trying to destroy his family," he wrote in a Facebook post. "I am not a drug user as the drug test taken today will show. As for the malicious possession charges, justice will be served."

AL.com reported that court administrators set Caleb Moore's first court appearance before Pike County District Judge William Hightower for April 7.

The younger Moore has faced drug charges on two other occasions, according to AL.com. In 2013, he pleaded guilty to drug-related charges in St. Clair County and was sentenced to probation. In 2011, he was charged with drug possession and driving under the influence in Crenshaw County.

"I've done nothing more than any other college kids," Caleb Moore told AL.com in January. "Because of who I am, it gets blown out of proportion. Since then I've got in a closer walk with the Lord. Whatever anyone says about me, it doesn't bother me. The people who know me and know what's true can really see what's going on here and see through critics of my dad."
