Ronald Stan, a 69-year-old Canadian man missing ever since a 1977 barn fire, has been found alive and suffering from dementia in Oklahoma after authorities in Ontario made a routine audit of cold cases.

Ontario Provincial Police reopened the case in July and found Stan was living under the name of Jeff Walton Sr. and contacted authorities in the United States, CBC News reported.

Stan was originally reported missing after the barn fire in East Williams Township, just west of London, Ontario, according to CBC News. He was 32 at the time. Stan was never found and in 1986 was declared legally dead after an investigation by police and the fire marshal.

Laurie Houghton, of the Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police, told the Ontario Star, that detectives were able to use "modern investigative not available in 1977" to crack the case and track down Stan.

"I can't speak to his motives," Houghton told the Star as to why Stan would leave his family in Canada to live a clandestine life in the United States. "We were able to connect the dots."

The Star reported that friends and relatives in Canada said Stan left behind a wife and two children. It wasn't clear if the family had been notified that Stan had been found alive.

Stan's Oklahoma son, Jeff Walton Jr., told the Star he was stunned by the revelations of his father's reported secret life and name before he was born.

"I'm still trying to put all the puzzle pieces together myself," Walton Jr. told the Star in a telephone interview, saying the family, which includes a stepmother and at least three children, was hit with the news this month.

The Star reported that Stan is currently living in a nursing home suffering from vascular dementia and heart disease. His current wife, Debra Proctor, filed for divorce upon hearing the news of his deception, Walton told the Star.

The Ontario Provincial Police said the case against Stan will be closed and no charges will be filed.
