RoboCop Pitch: Cyborg Police Officer Makes Ceremonial Toss (Video)

By    |   Wednesday, 04 Jun 2014 02:02 PM

RoboCop, the cyborg police officer seen earlier this year in the big screen remake of the original 1987 film, threw out the first pitch Tuesday night before the Toronto Blue Jays took on the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.

The character was on hand to celebrate "RoboCop Day" in Detroit as well as the DVD release of the latest movie, which was set in the city. Tigers outfielder Rajai Davis was selected to catch the first pitch.

"A Robo-arm strike, that's what I'm predicting," Davis told Fox Sports before the ceremonial throw. "He's got it in him, I think he's got the ability. I think he'll do it right. And I think he'll do it tonight because tonight's the night."

Unlike rapper 50 Cent's bizarre first pitch at the Mets' Citi Field last week, RoboCop's softly tossed pitch was more-or-less straight on.

"I don't think he used his real RoboCop powers to throw that pitch," Blue Jays broadcaster Buck Martinez said. "I know he can throw harder than that."

Some Twitter users used to moment as an opportunity to poke a little fun.

Other events were also planned to coincide with the release of the "RoboCop" DVD, including the unveiling of a RoboCop statue, but it was canceled when the statue wasn't ready.

"You may have heard in the news today that the RoboCop statue was being unveiled in Detroit today," the statue's designers, Imagination Station Detroit, said in a statement. "This was news to us! And not true news. To be clear: the RoboCop statue is still on track to be finished later this year, and is still in the hands of Giorgio Gikas at Venus Bronze Works in Detroit, but news reports about it being unveiled today are incorrect."
