Robert Stackowitz, an escaped Georgia robber on the run for 48 years, was finally tracked down in Connecticut and arrested on Monday by federal marshals. His mistake? Applying for Social Security.

Stackowitz, now 71, escaped in 1968 from the Carroll County Prison Work Camp in Carrolton, Georgia, where he was serving a 17-year sentence for robbery by force, the U.S. Marshals Service said in a news release.

Georgia Department of Corrections investigators uncovered a possible alias identity for Stackowitz linked to an address in Sherman, Connecticut. Stackowitz was arrested without incident and is awaiting extradition to Georgia.

Stackowitz bought the Connecticut home in the 1990s, WFSB-TV reported.

"He used to fixed boats locally, and he was just a nice guy," Mark Heinonen, a friend of Stackowitz, told the station. "Everyone liked him. He was a big, jolly, old guy."

Stackowitz was discovered after he applied for Social Security recently, The Associated Press reported.

He is being held at Bridgeport Correctional Center with bond set at $75,000, according to the Hartford Courant. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 6. Prosecutors are seeking a governor's warrant to speed up the extradition process.

Gwendolyn Hogan, spokeswoman for the Georgia prison system, told the Courant that a drivers license photo found during a comprehensive investigation by the Georgia Department of Corrections Fugitive Apprehension unit led to Stackowitz's arrest.

"They found a copy of his drivers license photo and compared it with a photo we had on file. This was the initial find in the investigation that drove them to confirm that it was Robert Stackowitz," she said.
