Rob Riggle has debuted as KFC’s new Colonel Sanders for the football season, and what makes this one special in particular is that he’s the first person to take on the role who actually has a real background as a colonel.

The actor and comedian is a retired Lieutenant Colonel who served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Now he’s playing the "owner, head coach, and marketing director" of the made-up Kentucky Buckets football team.

KFC will be using this as a marketing tool to promote their $20 Fill Ups.

According to Business Insider, Riggle will be portraying Colonel Sanders in “a series of ads tied to the kickoff of the NFL football season.”

The video promotes the Kentucky Buckets as "a real team, and not just a marketing gimmick to get buckets of delicious chicken in front of football fans."

“As owner, general manager, head coach, defensive coordinator, offensive coordinator, marketing director, groundskeeper, and scouting director of America’s newest professional football team, the Kentucky Buckets, I’ve got one goal in mind,” Coach Colonel Rob Riggle says in the ad. “To get buckets of delicious chicken across the goal line and in front of millions of fans on football Sundays. And Thursdays. And Mondays.”

Being the first actual colonel to take on the role of Sanders, Riggle was the popular choice for other reasons, too. Riggle is from Louisville, Kentucky, which is where KFC began in 1966.

“Rob Riggle was the obvious choice for those on the internet calling for us to use the real Kentucky Colonel in our ads,” Kevin Hochman, Chief Marketing Officer for KFC U.S., said in a news release. “He was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and served our country as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marines. It doesn’t get any more real than that.”

George Hamilton appeared as KFC’s Extra Crispy Colonel this summer, and comedians such as Norm MacDonald and Darrell Hammond also have played the role of the Kentucky Colonel.
