Road Rage Slaying: Off-Duty NJ Cop Held in Maryland Shooting

By    |   Monday, 10 Jun 2013 07:00 AM

An off-duty New Jersey police officer accused of shooting and killing a man Saturday night in an apparent road rage incident on a Maryland highway is being held on $1 million bail.

Joseph Walker, 40, of Eastampton Township, N.J., was charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter after he got into an altercation with Joseph Harvey, 36, of Anne Arundel County, Md., around 8:30 p.m. Saturday on the side of Maryland's Interstate 97 near Millersville, police said.

After engaging in some sort of exchange for about a mile, Walker, in a Kia minivan with his wife and three children, pulled over to the shoulder about 100 to 150 feet behind Harvey, who was driving a Honda with one other passenger.

What happened next is unclear, but one police account claimed that Harvey got out of his car and "began walking toward [Walker] in a reportedly aggressive manner." The two "came into contact" and Walker fired shots from a Glock .45-caliber handgun, fatally wounding Harvey.

Harvey was taken by ambulance to Baltimore Washington Medical Center where he was pronounced dead with three gunshot wounds, and Walker was taken to the same facility after he complained of chest pains.

Neither Walker's family nor Harvey's passenger were hurt in the shooting.

Walker, a sworn officer with the prosecutor's office in Hudson County, N.J., was arrested and is being held at the Anne Arundel County Detention Center on $1 million bail.

"We are aware of the fatal shooting incident involving one of our detectives, who was off-duty and traveling in Maryland with his wife and children," a spokesman for the Hudson County prosecutor's office told The Washington Post.
