Rep. Nunes: Threat Level to America at an All-Time High

By    |   Monday, 22 Jun 2015 10:36 AM

Rep. Devin Nunes, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Chairman, believes the U.S. is up against “the highest threat level we have ever faced in this country” because of the Internet’s radicalization of young people and the flow of foreign fighters to and from the Middle East.

Nunes, R-California, appeared on CBS News' "Face the Nation" over the weekend and specifically warned against the threat that young people pose when they travel to fight with ISIS before returning to their home countries in Western Europe or the U.S., where they may then carry out terrorist attacks. The Internet especially aids terrorists in reaching out to these young people and recruiting them for their nefarious purposes, he said.

“They're very good at communicating through separate avenues where it's very difficult to track,” Nunes told CBS. “That's why when you get a young person who is willing to get into these chat rooms, go on the Internet, and get radicalized, it's something we are not only unprepared [for], we are also not used to it in this country.”

In 2014, the U.S. Senate reported that an estimated 16,000 fighters traveled to Syria to fight for Islamist causes, according to Inquisitr.com. Although the exact percentage of Americans in that estimate is unclear, Nunes fears for U.S. citizens’ safety, especially at large gatherings and celebrations, such as the upcoming 4th of July festivities.

“It's just tough to secure those types of areas if you have someone who wants to blow themselves up or open fire or other threats of that nature and we just don't know or can track all of the bad guys that are out there today,” Nunes told CBS.

The FBI told ABC News that it is currently investigating hundreds of potential terrorist threats credited to ISIS in all 50 states and expects to arrest several plotters before the 4th of July, including a recent case in New York where a college student was arrested for preparing an explosive device.
