The new Raspberry Pi 2, a microcomputer that costs just $35, is six times more powerful than its predecessor and reportedly boasts enough power to run Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system.

The new board, on sale this week, also features more memory, CNET reported.

“Because it has an ARMv7 processor, it can run the full range of ARM GNU/Linux distributions, including Snappy Ubuntu Core, as well as Microsoft Windows 10,” the Raspberry Pi Foundation blog said of its latest mini-computer.

The company launched in 2012 with the Pi Model B, a board that has sold more than 4.5 million units and offered an opportunity for kids to learn about programming.

Eben Upton, founder of Raspberry Pi, told the BBC the latest model brings the kit into the realm of a PC.

"You can do most of the things with this that you can do with a PC. You can surf the web, you can watch videos, you can play games like Minecraft. But we also bundle it with the tools that children need in order to learn how to program,” Upton said. "The great thing is — apart from two changes — that we've managed to keep everything else the same. So, all of those tutorials that people have developed over the last few years will carry on working with this device. It just kind of broadens out the range of interesting stuff kids can do."

Raspberry Pi has been working with Microsoft on its latest release, and that’s what brought Windows 10 into the picture, according to the BBC.

"The Raspberry Pi 2-compatible version of Windows 10 will be available free of charge to makers," BBC quoted a Microsoft blog.

"We see the maker community as an amazing source of innovation for smart, connected devices that represent the very foundation of the next wave of computing, and we're excited to be a part of this community," Microsoft’s Kevin Dallas wrote online.

Raspberry Pi 2 now has competition in the market, including the Imagination Creator CI20.
