Queen Elizabeth's 90th birthday celebration continued Sunday, with about 10,000 guests braving the rain for a picnic lunch, one of the last events as part of the monarch's official birthday festivities.

Members of the royal family greeted guests at the Patron's Lunch, shaking hands for about 30 minutes while the queen gave a speech thanking visitors for their birthday wishes, the BBC reported.

"To everyone here today and those holding street parties elsewhere I would like to say thank you for the wonderful support and encouragement that you continue to give to me," Queen Elizabeth said. "I hope these happy celebrations will remind us of the many benefits that can flow when people come together for a common purpose as families, friends or neighbors."

The Telegraph wrote that, while the Queen was gracious, she also joked about the celebration, which began on her actual birth date of April 21. The queen's official birthday celebration is held in June as part of a tradition going back 250 years that's meant to ensure better weather.

"I much appreciate the kindness of all your birthday wishes and have been delighted and moved by the many cards and messages I have received," Queen Elizabeth said, noted The Telegraph. "How I will feel if people are still singing 'Happy Birthday' to me in December remains to be seen."

Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, said that his grandmother has "strong health and relentless energy; her sharp wit and famous sense of humor, and the fact that the Queen remains very much at the helm of our family, our nation and the Commonwealth," the U.K. newspaper said.

He said Queen Elizabeth is a person "world leaders can turn to for a first-hand perspective of the arc of history."

The Sun reported that guests who attended the picnic received a picnic basket with ponchos for the rain.

"I think this is wonderful, I would have walked through fire [to be here]," attendee Audrey Asquith told The Sun. "We can't be bothering about the weather otherwise we wouldn't go anywhere in England."

Queen Elizabeth also took time out to address the shooting tragedy in Orlando as well.
