An overseas museum shelled out $140,000 for one of Princess Diana's most famous and favorite fairytale dresses at an auction in London this week.

The unidentified museum outbid an anonymous U.S. telephone buyer at the Kerry Taylor Auction House's "Passion for Fashion" event in South London Tuesday.

The dress is "going to be loved and looked after," Taylor, a renowned fashion auctioneer, told ABC News.

Diana donned the white and gold bejeweled ball gown, designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel from their Diaghilev collection, for the 1987 premiere of the James Bond film "The Living Daylights" and once for a trip to the Bolshoi ballet.

"This dress was a real favorite of hers," Taylor told CNN. "It's the kind of dress that a little girl sitting down at school will draw when she's asked to draw a princess."

The Emanuels were reportedly Diana's favorite designers, so much so that the princess even selected the duo to design her 1981 wedding dress.

"She trusted us and it was our mission to make her really pleased and proud that she’d chosen us," Elizabeth Emanuel told ABC News in an interview several years ago.
