Prince William appears on the latest cover of Attitude magazine, becoming the first member of the British royal family to appear on the cover of a gay publication.

"No one should be bullied for their sexuality or any other reason and no one should have to put up with the kind of hate that these young people have endured in their lives," Prince William said in a statement to the magazine.

"The young gay, lesbian and transgender individuals I met through Attitude are truly brave to speak out and to give hope to people who are going through terrible bullying right now. Their sense of strength and optimism should give us all encouragement to stand up to bullying wherever we see it," he continued.

The BBC News reported that the Duke of Cambridge had invited the magazine to Kensington Palace to meet with members of the LGBT community and listen to their experiences about bullying. Kensington Palace told the BBC News that Prince William was "moved" by the stories he heard from those attending the meeting.

"Attitude editor Matthew Todd facilitated the discussion," the magazine said on its website. "After meeting with the nine delegates, Prince William then posed for the cover of Attitude magazine, photographed by Leigh Keily. The cover marks the first time a member of the Royal Family has been photographed for the cover of a gay publication."

Kensington Palace said in a statement, noted The Daily Beast, that the Prince William has been fighting against bullying and the stigma around mental illness. He leads the Heads Together campaign on mental health and well-being, noted the Palace statement.

Prince William said in his comments to Attitude that gays should not feel bad about their sexuality.

"… Speak to a trusted adult, a friend, a teacher, Childline, Diana Award or some other service and get the help you need," he said. "You should be proud of the person you are and you have nothing to be ashamed of."

The Daily Mail wrote that Attitude, which was founded in 1994, was also the first gay publication in the United Kingdom to interview a prime minister when it featured Tony Blair in 2005. It has featured numerous straight celebrities on its cover, including David Beckham, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Lady Gaga and Prime Minister David Cameron.
