The new Porsche Macan, a small, entry-level SUV, made its world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show, and the company hopes the new line will push sales when it hits the market next year.

The Macan is the company’s fifth model line, AutoWeek said, and offers buyers a junior option to the company’s Porsche Cayenne SUV. The new Macans are in a more accessible price range, with the Macan S to sell for $49,900 and the Macan Turbo set at $72,300.

Porsche has high hopes for the entry-level sports utility vehicle, putting it up against the Mercedes GLK and BMW X3, Forbes said. Initial sales estimates are projecting the Macan will sell 50,000-55,000 units per year, with hopes those numbers could push toward 75,000, Forbes said. Should the more optimistic sales occur, the Macan would be responsible for half of Porsche’s annual sales.

The Macan may be an SUV, but it has the distinct Porsche look, following the lines of a 911 and with a front end much like the luxury SUV Cayenne.

Porsche AG president and CEO Matthias Muller introduced the car, calling it the “sports car of its class,” and saying the company would reach new customers. He congratulated the audience on being there for the unveiling of a new model and “an entirely new car that moves us into a whole new market sector.”

“It takes everything we have learned about engineering cars over 60 years and makes it available to a whole new group of buyers, some of whom might ever have thought they’d one day own a Porsche,” he said in a video posted on the Porsche website.

The smaller SUV comes standard with four-wheel drive and the choice of two engines, Forbes said, a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 with 340 horsepower (like in the company’s Panamera) or a 3.6-liter twin-turbo V-6 with 400 horsepower. Those engines put the top speed at about 164 miles per hour and it will go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, Forbes said.
