Police Heimlich training that Ian Brown received helped him probably save a classmate’s life, as seen in a dramatic cafeteria surveillance clip.

Brown, a freshman at Central High School in La Crosse, Wisconsin, was sitting across a table from Will Olson on Wednesday when Olson started choking, according to ABC 13 News.

Others at the table thought he was just playing around, but Brown said he saw the color change in Olson’s neck and knew it wasn’t a joking matter.

He applied the Heimlich maneuver on Olson until some food was dislodged.

“Brown learned the Heimlich maneuver as part of his first aid training as a Police Explorer with the City of La Crosse Police Department,” according to a post on the police department’s Facebook page, per Fox 17 West Michigan.

La Crosse Police offers a program – Police Explorer – that provides young people with “a personal awareness of the criminal injustice system through training, practical experiences, competition, and other activities.”

Brown took Olson to the school’s nurse’s office where Kim Mahlum, praised the training program, saying it helped in a “very dangerous situation,” said ABC.

Brown received recognition on Facebook for his harrowing act, noted Fox.

“Thank you for staying calm and knowing exactly what to do!” one woman said in a comment on La Crosse’s Facebook post. “You are a hero!”

“Good job kid!!!” That’s a very scary situation and you handled it like pro!!” another Facebook user wrote.
