A police chief killed himself in the parking lot on Thursday shortly after being suspended and then escorted out of the department in Bay St. Louis Police, Mississippi. Officials called it “a bad day for law enforcement.”

Chief Mike DeNardo shot himself in the chest, said CBS News. He was found dead next to his vehicle after sheriff's deputies removed him from the building.

“It just kind of went bad” from there, said Hancock County Sheriff Ricky Adam who told WWL-TV in New Orleans that DeNardo was involved in an ongoing investigation.

“Our initial finding is a self-inflicted gunshot,” Adam said.

“There was some evidence presented that caused us, at the request of the sheriff’s department, to suspend Mike for the term of the investigation,” Mayor Les Fillingame told reporters. “But we really felt like, from the initial conversation with Mike, that (the issue) would be resolved.”

Officials held an emergency meeting just hours after DeNardo’s death and decided  to temporarily turn over his duties to Sheriff's Capt. Wes Mayley, WWL-TV noted.

“As these officers who are grieving now come back, we’ll just integrate them back into their regular jobs,” said Adam. “We’ll oversee the management of it and how they do their job.”

“He was just a tremendous public servant, and he’s going to be greatly missed,” Mayor Fillingame said.

DeNardo had been with the department since 2004 and was appointed police chief in 2010, said CBS News. Before that he worked in the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana for 18 years.
