While most hotels trumpet about how new they are, the magnificent Notre Dame of Jerusalem Center, in the heart of the Holy Land, is more than 100 years old and proud of it.

Under the supervision of the Rev. Eamon Kelly and Father Juan Solana LC, and a wonderful team of managers and staff, this spiritual, peaceful complex in Israel has become a favorite for visitors embarking on pilgrimages to experience the sacred lands where Christ walked.

Construction of the extraordinary site began in 1885 and was completed in 1904. In 1978, Pope John Paul II signed a decree making the center a Pontifical Institute and Ecumenical Center. And on its centennial, the Pope commissioned the Legionaries of Christ to manage it.

Accommodating up to 280 people, the center features an exhibit of the Shroud of Turin, believed to be Jesus' burial cloth. A historic chapel is on site and there are four restaurants and banquet facilities.

During a recent interview on Newsmax TV's "America's Forum," Kelly explained that when Christians visit Israel and see where Jesus lived and died, the gospel becomes more real for them.

"It's a powerful experience of the reality of the gospel. ... When you come to the Holy Land, you say, 'Wow, there's the Sea of Galilee, this isn't a myth,"' Kelly said.

"When you walk up the Mount of Olives, it's for real. You can touch it."

Notre Dame of Jerusalem Center is located in the heart of the city, just a few steps away from the Old City’s New Gate and within minutes from the Holy Sepulcher.

In addition to being near significant Christian Holy places, it is also close to many sacred Jewish and Islamic sites, including the Western Wall, the Dome of the Rock and the Al Aqsa Mosque.

And there are always new discoveries being made. Recently, archaeologists working on an expansion to the Tower of David Museum, discovered an abandoned building beside the museum in Jerusalem’s Old City.

It is believed by many historians, archaeologists and religious scholars to be the site of Jesus' trial and his sentencing to death, a key part of the New Testament.

More information about the center is available on the Web at http://www.notredamecenter.org.
