Picked-Up Flag Causes Controversy as Cowboys Beat Lions in Playoffs

When NFL officials at the Detroit Lions-Dallas Cowboys game Sunday picked up a flag and reversed a call without explanation, the Internet lit up with conspiracy theories about referees handing the win to Dallas.

Irate posts, mostly from Lions fans, flooded the Web. It was spurred on by the fact that there wasn’t an immediate explanation for why the officials threw a flag for pass interference and then picked it up on a play involving Dallas linebacker Anthony Hitchens and Lions tight end Brandon Pettigrew.

After the game, ESPN’s Todd Archer asked referee Pete Morelli about what happened, and NFL Communications put out a transcript of their talk.

“The back judge threw his flag for defensive pass interference,” Morelli told Archer. “We got other information from another official from a different angle that thought the contact was minimal and didn’t warrant pass interference. He thought it was face-guarding.”

Morelli said it was the head linesman who saw the play, and added that face guarding is not a foul in professional football.

When Archer asked whether the situation should have been handled differently, with more waiting time before announcing the call, Morelli answered, “Probably, yes. The information came and then the officials got together a little bit later, after it was given to me, the first information. It would have probably been smoother if we got together.”

Detroit fans weren’t happy on Sunday about the call, and the play was picked apart endlessly by sports commentators.

On NFL.com, Pettigrew said the “Flag that Wasn’t” was “ridiculous.”

“I didn't get an explanation. It was ridiculous. ... He ran through me," he told NFL’s Albert Breer.
