Pharrell's 'Happy' Sign Language Version Goes Viral (Video)

A sign language version of Pharrell's hit single "Happy" created by students and staff at a deaf film camp has gone viral this week, adding a unique addition to a growing number of the song's covers.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Deaf Film Camp at Camp Mark Seven in New York offers immersive filmmaking classes for deaf and hard-of-hearing youths, and the universal appeal of the number one Billboard hit inspired a broad swath of students to make the music video right there on their scenic lakeside campus — even throwing in their priest.

"We're breaking new ground with the camp and for these campers, who see — and can express — the world in unique ways," Stacy Marie Lawrence, the director of Deaf Film Camp told the Reporter last April when the program first kicked off.

So far, the camp has offered up three deaf filmmakers to teach the students: screenwriter Kalen Feeney, Wayne Betts Jr., and animator Braam Jordaan. Between them, their credits include the short film "The Renaissance," "Cold Case," "Switched at Birth," and the upcoming "Deaf Ghost." Rosa Lee Timmand and Azora Telford have also taught at the camp.

"Happy" itself debuted late last year in the animated film "Despicable Me 2" and is also featured on Pharrell's second solo album, "Girl." It's sold over 10 million copies worldwide, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

According to The Telegraph (UK), late-night talk-show host Jimmy Fallon, the staff of the US embassy in Armenia, and hundreds of fans around the world have covered the song. Famous musical funnyman "Weird Al" Yankovic also honored the song with his own parody version this summer.
